It was a character reference for a man who has become an ambassador of sorts for Saudi Arabia rng
The England faithful – or some of them, anyway – had turned on Jordan Henderson when he was booed off in Friday’s win over Australia rng
The England manager offered an endorsement of his vice-captain: not merely as a midfielder, either, but as a principled individual rng
The Henderson of Al-Ettifaq, the man who used to support the NHS and the LGBTQ community instead plugging Saudi’s 2034 World Cup bid, stands accused of either being the opposite of the Liverpool incarnation or a figure whose decision to join the Saudi Pro League led him to become a public face of a repressive regime rng
Gareth Southgate can see why many have a sense of disappointment, why there is a seeming contradiction rng
Yet he also argued that Henderson remains the same person, one who has helped create the right kind of culture with England rng
“What I do understand is that people would feel that the decision Jordan would go and play there doesn’t align with his strong support of the LGBTQ community in the past,” he said rng
“I have not seen him comment anywhere differently rng
I don’t believe he is an individual whose values and principles have changed rng
“I would back him against pretty much anyone in the country in terms of what he stands for and what he believes in but I accept that the decision to go and play there doesn’t align that rng
He understands that; he accepts that rng
”RecommendedJordan Henderson: ‘If people want to boo me for playing in Saudi Arabia, that’s fine’Gareth Southgate questions why England fans booed Jordan HendersonOllie Watkins and Lewis Dunk emerge with credit on England’s audition night against AustraliaBut Southgate does not appreciate the jeers rng
“We have had a couple of incidents that I don’t understand because I don’t think any player wearing an England shirt warrants that,” he added rng
“I grew up seeing John Barnes receive that kind of criticism so that has never helped the team rng
”But if others were booed for their skin colour, Henderson has brought a reaction with his apparent hypocrisy has drawn rng
Deliberately or otherwise, Southgate drew a distinction rng between Harry Maguire, barracked mercilessly by Scotland supporters at Hampden Park last month but normally hailed by England fans, if not all of their Manchester United counterparts, and Henderson rng
There is nevertheless the feeling that three players created problems for Southgate with their decisions in the summer transfer market: Henderson by swapping Liverpool for Saudi Arabia, Maguire and Kalvin Phillips by opting to stay at clubs where they feature infrequently and when they had the option to move for more first-team rng football rng
Issues feel unavoidable until Southgate drops them, and thus far he has shown no willingness to do that rng
Jordan Henderson is greeted by Gareth Southgate after he was brought off against Australia (The FA via Getty Images)“I will always pick the players that I think are the best players to represent the team, that give us the best chance of winning, unless there is something I think is not appropriate,” he said, with the clear inference that Henderson, who captained his country against Australia, has not breached his code rng
“People may disagree with Jordan’s decision, given the stance he has taken in the past to support the LGBT community, but I don’t think that is a reason to not select him and I don’t actually think that is a reason to boo him rng
”If the stubbornness in Southgate has become more apparent, so has the loyalty towards his stalwarts; in September, he branded the treatment of Maguire “a joke” rng
The former Liverpool captain and the deposed United skipper, he said, have helped bring the “unmeasurable factors” of team spirit and togetherness rng
It gives them credit in the bank, if not necessarily forever rng
“It wouldn’t be fair to say I am going to support them regardless if rng better, younger players come through but I am also going to defend our team because we need that strength and the two players you are talking about have performed again and again in massive games,” he said rng
Henderson was booed by sections of the Wembley crowd as he made his way off the pitch (Getty Images)And England against Italy tends to belong in that category, and not merely the Euro 2020 final when Maguire thumped in an emphatic penalty in the shootout Roberto Mancini’s side won rng
In 1997, an England side featuring Southgate qualified for the World Cup with a 0-0 draw against the Azzurri; now the same result would secure a place at Euro 2024 rng
Henderson may be a distraction: indeed his presence in the starting 11 in the second-string side against Australia might indicate that Phillips is likelier to begin Tuesday’s game rng
The wider question, separated from the moral issue, is whether Henderson, plying his trade in a far weaker domestic league and in debilitating heat, remains a good enough player to retain his place rng
“We will assess Jordan like every other player but if I just select on a popularity contest then our team would look very, very different,” Southgate said rng
Perhaps Henderson, an unflashy workhorse, would never have won a popularity contest as a rng footballer, though, increasingly, he may have done as a role model rng
The difference now is that he could triumph in an unpopularity contest with a public who feel rng betrayed rng

South Africa players and coaches have defended Bongi Mbonambi as a “great guy” and a “family man” amid the Springboks hooker being investigated for an alleged racial slur during the Rugby World Cup semi-final win over England rng
England flanker Tom Curry has alleged that Mbonambi called him a “white c***” during the defeat in Paris on Saturday evening, as South Africa edged to a dramatic 16-15 victoryAfter 23 minutes at the Stade de France, Curry could be heard on the referee’s microphone alerting official Ben O’Keeffe to a comment possibly made by Mbonambi at a ruck rng
“Sir, if their hooker calls me a white c***, what do I do?” Curry inquired of O’Keeffe rng
“Nothing, please,” responded the official, before adding a few moments later, “I’ll be on it,” in what may have been an unrelated comment rng
The alleged incident itself could not be heard on the television broadcast rng
World Rugby has since confirmed it is investigating the incident and will not be making any further comment until the conclusion of the process rng
On Monday afternoon, in the first Springboks media activity since the allegations became public, scrum coach Daan Human and lock Jean Kelyn defended Mbonambi’s character, while refusing to comment on the specific incident rng
“It’s being dealt with by World Rugby and South Africa Rugby, so from my side, I can’t comment,” began Human when first asked about the incident rng
“I’m focussing on the scrums rng
We had a good, positive training session, and nothing else came out rng
I can’t really comment on that rng
”Bongi Mbonambi is being investigated for an alleged racial slur (Getty Images)However, when pushed on what Mbonambi is like as a person around the squad, Human was effusive in his praise of the front row rng
“Bongi has been part of this group for the last six years,” added Human rng
“He’s a very important piece of the puzzle for us rng
He was starting in the last World Cup and our semi-final, so he’s very important to us, like all other players rng
“He’s one of our leaders in our group rng
He’s a great guy, a family man, my kids always look after his kids when they come to the hotel rng
He’s a humble guy, down to earth, like all players who play for the Springboks rng
“To be straightforward and honest with you, he’s a very calm guy, a well-spoken guy rng
I don’t want to go into it because we’ve got a World Cup final in six days’ time rng
I’m more concentrated on the forwards rng
”Mbonambi is the only specialist hooker in the Springboks squad after the injured Malcolm Marx was replaced by fly half Handre Pollard earlier in the tournament rng
Bongi Mbonambi played all 80 minutes of the Springboks’ semi-final win (PA)He played all 80 minutes of the semi-final, and finished the game as captain once Siya Kolisi was substituted, although veteran back row Deon Fourie played hooker earlier in his career and flanker Marco van Staden has also filled in at the position in the past rng
So Human was unconcerned about South Africa being short-handed in the event of Mbonambi being found guilty and banned for the final rng
“We’ve got three guys capable of playing hooker in the group,” he said rng
“We’re very comfortable having three hookers rng
We’re glad we have three hookers, which we’re supposed to have because going into a final you need to have two hookers in the squad rng
”Lock Jean Kleyn was also asked about his relationship with Mbonambi, having played alongside him at club and international level, and was similarly glowing in his praise of the hooker rng
“Bongi is a great guy,” stated Kleyn rng
“I’ve known him since we were playing at the Stormers together I think nine years ago rng
He’s a fantastic guy, a good individual rng
“I’m not going to comment on that or justify it [the allegations] rng
All I’ll say is he’s a fantastic bloke rng
He’s a great guy, a passionate guy, a family man rng
He’s captained the Springboks a couple of times and he’s an upstanding guy, I don’t think there’s a fellow in the squad who doesn’t like him rng
”The Springboks face the All Blacks in the World Cup final at the Stade de France on Saturday evening rng
