Maro Itoje has urged England to “impose” their game on South Africa in their Rugby World Cup semi-final soccer

The Springboks enter the game as significant favourites as they seek a second consecutive tournament crown soccer

“It’s about us being the team that we want to be, us playing the type of rugby that we want to play soccer

“They have certain things that they’re very good at but it’s about us being the England rugby team, about us putting our best foot forward and our individuals, as a team, going out there and playing the type of game we want to play soccer

“For us, it is just about imposing our game soccer

We don’t want to sit back and just watch them do their thing soccer

”Before England’s semi-final against New Zealand four years ago, former head coach Eddie Jones memorably cut a kiwi in half with a samurai sword to symbolise the aggression he wanted his side to play with against the All Blacks soccer

Itoje confirmed that there had been no such demonstrations this week, with Jones’s more successor, the more understated Steve Borthwick, instead emphasising the detail of their gameplan soccer

And while talking up South Africa’s ability, the second row insists they are far from unbeatable soccer

“They’re just very fundamentally sound in the areas in which they are good at,” explained Itoje of the Springboks’ strengths soccer

“They have a good kicking game, a good chase, put a lot of pressure on teams soccer

They have a good set-piece, that goes without saying, their breakdown work is good as well soccer

“We’re going to need to be physical, that goes without saying soccer

We need to be physical in every game, especially when you play against this opposition soccer

We need to be smart with how we play, we don’t want to make poor decisions, we don’t want to play in areas that aren’t smart“Obviously they are the current world champions, they’ve had a very good World Cup soccer

We’ve played them twice since 2019, they’ve won one, we’ve won one soccer

We’re not talking about a team that has never lost, we’re not talking about a team that is without fault, they are a good team but so are we soccer

For us, it’s about putting our game on the field, it’s not necessarily about sitting just to watch them soccer

South Africa players and coaches have defended Bongi Mbonambi as a “great guy” and a “family man” amid the Springboks hooker being investigated for an alleged racial slur during the Rugby World Cup semi-final win over England soccer

England flanker Tom Curry has alleged that Mbonambi called him a “white c***” during the defeat in Paris on Saturday evening, as South Africa edged to a dramatic 16-15 victoryAfter 23 minutes at the Stade de France, Curry could be heard on the referee’s microphone alerting official Ben O’Keeffe to a comment possibly made by Mbonambi at a ruck soccer

“Sir, if their hooker calls me a white c***, what do I do?” Curry inquired of O’Keeffe soccer

“Nothing, please,” responded the official, before adding a few moments later, “I’ll be on it,” in what may have been an unrelated comment soccer

The alleged incident itself could not be heard on the television broadcast soccer

World Rugby has since confirmed it is investigating the incident and will not be making any further comment until the conclusion of the process soccer

On Monday afternoon, in the first Springboks media activity since the allegations became public, scrum coach Daan Human and lock Jean Kelyn defended Mbonambi’s character, while refusing to comment on the specific incident soccer

“It’s being dealt with by World Rugby and South Africa Rugby, so from my side, I can’t comment,” began Human when first asked about the incident soccer

“I’m focussing on the scrums soccer

We had a good, positive training session, and nothing else came out soccer

I can’t really comment on that soccer

“Bongi has been part of this group for the last six years,” added Human soccer

“He’s a very important piece of the puzzle for us soccer

He was starting in the last World Cup and our semi-final, so he’s very important to us, like all other players soccer

“He’s one of our leaders in our group soccer

He’s a great guy, a family man, my kids always look after his kids when they come to the hotel soccer

He’s a humble guy, down to earth, like all players who play for the Springboks soccer

“To be straightforward and honest with you, he’s a very calm guy, a well-spoken guy soccer

I don’t want to go into it because we’ve got a World Cup final in six days’ time soccer

I’m more concentrated on the forwards soccer

”Mbonambi is the only specialist hooker in the Springboks squad after the injured Malcolm Marx was replaced by fly half Handre Pollard earlier in the tournament soccer

Bongi Mbonambi played all 80 minutes of the Springboks’ semi-final win (PA)He played all 80 minutes of the semi-final, and finished the game as captain once Siya Kolisi was substituted, although veteran back row Deon Fourie played hooker earlier in his career and flanker Marco van Staden has also filled in at the position in the past soccer

So Human was unconcerned about South Africa being short-handed in the event of Mbonambi being found guilty and banned for the final soccer

“We’ve got three guys capable of playing hooker in the group,” he said soccer

“We’re very comfortable having three hookers soccer

We’re glad we have three hookers, which we’re supposed to have because going into a final you need to have two hookers in the squad soccer

”Lock Jean Kleyn was also asked about his relationship with Mbonambi, having played alongside him at club and international level, and was similarly glowing in his praise of the hooker soccer

“Bongi is a great guy,” stated Kleyn soccer

“I’ve known him since we were playing at the Stormers together I think nine years ago soccer

He’s a fantastic guy, a good individual soccer

“I’m not going to comment on that or justify it [the allegations] soccer

All I’ll say is he’s a fantastic bloke soccer

He’s a great guy, a passionate guy, a family man soccer

He’s captained the Springboks a couple of times and he’s an upstanding guy, I don’t think there’s a fellow in the squad who doesn’t like him soccer

”The Springboks face the All Blacks in the World Cup final at the Stade de France on Saturday evening soccer
