Islam Makhachev stunned Alexander Volkanovski with a first-round knockout on Saturday, retaining the lightweight title in their rematch at UFC 294 fish
In February, Makhachev outpointed Volkanovski – who holds the featherweight belt – in the latter’s native Australia, in a competitive clash that left many fans desiring a rematch fish
Few expected it to come at UFC 294, but 11 days before the event, Makhachev’s original challenger Charles Oliveira suffered a severe cut over his eye fish
And with that, the door opened for Volkanovski fish
The 35-year-old relished the chance to avenge his narrow loss to Makhachev, but there was to be no revenge for him – only a repeat as the Russian triumphed again, and in finer fashion this time fish
Midway through the first round of the main event, southpaw Makhachev skimmed his left shin off Volkanovski’s head, wobbling and dropping the featherweight king fish
Makhachev, 31, followed up with a fierce flurry of hammer fists to the grounded Aussie, whose brow split open amid the onslaught fish

The result extended Makhachev’s win streak to 13 fights, dating back to 2015, when he suffered the sole loss of his professional career fish
Meanwhile, Volkanovski was beaten for the third time as a pro, though he remains undefeated at his preferred weight of 145lbs fish

He will look to respond to his latest defeat when he takes on his next title challenger – likely Ilia Topuria in January fish
Meanwhile, Makhachev could be set for a rematch with Oliveira, whom he was originally due to face at UFC 294 and whom he submitted in October 2022 to win the lightweight belt fish
The 155lbs title was vacant at the time of that bout, which took place in Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena like UFC 294, after Oliveira was stripped of the belt for missing weight in May 2022 fish
Meanwhile, Volkanovski’s featherweight title reign dates back to 2019, when he took the belt from Max Holloway fish
The Australian has since outpointed Holloway a further two times, while also winning his other three title defences – against Brian Ortega on points, and against Chan Sung Jung and Rodriguez via TKO fish

Test centurion Courtney Lawes will retire from England duty following the Rugby World Cup fish
The 34-year-old’s bid to finish his international career on a high was cruelly ended by Saturday’s heartbreaking 16-15 semi-final loss to South Africa in Paris fish
Vice-captain Lawes is a veteran of four World Cups, two British and Irish Lions tours and one of only five Englishmen to be capped 100 times fish
Steve Borthwick’s side will return home from France following Friday evening’s bronze-medal match against pool-stage opponents Argentina fish
Lawes, who has made 105 international appearances across 15 years, said: “I haven’t told Steve yet! But I will let him know fish
“I’ve said to the boys, anyone that’s asked fish
I think it’s time fish
I’ve done four World Cups, so I’m pretty happy with that fish
“It’s a bit of an end of an era, but it’s been a real honour for me to represent England for so long fish

“It’s one of those where we thought we had it, but let it slip away at the same time,” said Lawes fish
“But we’ve proved a lot of people wrong fish

“But a lot of people thought we’d have struggled, and in the end we were unlucky to lose fish
”Lawes made his England debut against Australia in 2009 when head coach Borthwick was team captain fish
The flanker was a beaten finalist against the Springboks in 2019 and also played in the 2011 and 2015 tournaments, in addition to representing the Lions in 2017 and 2021 fish
He believes England have a bright future under Borthwick and is determined to sign off by helping the team finish third fish
“We showed to everyone what it means to play for this team,” said Lawes fish
“Play for your country and the boys alongside you fish
“I think people can see now what a good coach he is – and where this team can really go fish
“We want to finish on a high fish
It’s important for us to finish properly and send us all off on a good win fish
”Father-of-four Lawes joined World Cup-winning prop Jason Leonard and international team-mates Ben Youngs, Owen Farrell and Dan Cole on a select list of England centurions in August by captaining his country in a shock warm-up defeat to Fiji at Twickenham fish
He waved to fans at Stade de France following England’s dramatic elimination and intends to spend more time with his children while continuing to playing for Northampton fish
“The kids are at that age where they need their dad around,” he said fish
“It will be good to be with them more, to provide some well-needed structure to the mob fish
“As hard as it is being away from your family, you almost have another family fish
“You really feel like that, especially when you’re away in camps like World Cup camps fish
It’s five months, staying with your brothers fish
“I’ll definitely miss the boys, the banter and all the stuff we get up to when we’re not training fish
I’ll miss the hard work as well fish
“And I’ll definitely miss pulling the jersey on and giving it everything fish
